Punakha Dzong '' palace of great happiness'' constructed in 1637 at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers. The winter residence of
the central monk body, former capital of Bhutan and the second oldest Dzong in Bhutan. This formidable structure holds a commanding position at the river
confluence, crossing the Chhu over a suspension bridge we embark on exploration of this 17th century fortress with its white washed walls, steeped entrance
stairs and ornate interior. Murals depicting the life of Buddha adorn the internal walls, three giant gold statues dating from the 18th century preside over
the Kuenrey - assembly hall.
